We had our customary Chinese New Year Training camp in Puli the last three days.
We got a six-hour window of no rain on second day. Wow. Heaven.
We wanted to do some quality k’s to top off the base we’ve been building this winter. The extended vacation was also pretty much the only days during the year that our families and friends can spend quality time together without the stress of racing or racing around. It was an excellent excuse to cook up some quality food. And put the espresso machine to some quality use.
Scott and Joe from SRAM joined our regular Sat. morning training ride this week. I hope they enjoyed the change of climate from the SRAM HQ in Chicago (snow!).

In the afternoon Paolo and Alessandra from Cinelli came by ModusVelo. Ray, Inigo and I were really happy to have an opportunity to talk to them, learn more about Cinelli (especially the new Strato and the possibility of customized 客製化 Best of ) and express our thanks for their support. 我們受 Rick 和 Tina 和 Olive 和 Kai 的招待在他們東勢山上的家過元旦。白天在山上健行。晚上隔著新社臺地眺望台中市的煙火秀。早餐是 homemade biscuits (by Tina), 咖啡,炒馬鈴薯和茶葉蛋。晚餐是豆漿火鍋,烤肉。Two-course dessert 是 cheese cake 和 Tina 做的南瓜派。
Rick 和 Tina 的 mountain home 要爬四,五公里的陡坡才到的了。我現在才知道原來有時候 Rick 和我們在周六騎完後還要再爬回來做那些 never-ending home improvement projects.
我們討論也許下次我們隊上訓練營就可用此作基地。或 survival camp。
We are spread out all over during the New Year– Inigo in Basque country, us here in Taichung, Ray recovering from a training crash in Taipei. And currently TCR seems to be engaged in much pastry-eating and doing more than our share of living well. But soon, very soon, soon enough, we shall train hard and go fast and Super Supau will once again become a stable of our diet.

Xiaoyu (wrestling with a 15-year-old brakeless scooter) and Fangzi (sitting backwards pro-style on said scooter) risked their well-being for these footage. They were heroic.
80km. 13 climbs. Over 2200m of climbing. Just over 4 hours. 9 guys. Xiaoyu and Fangzi the support/photo crew. Along the Dadu plateau that sepeartes Taichung city from the sea. Who’d have thought there’d be so much climbing along that humble looking rise.

It was a perfect day for riding. Great weather. Great camaraderie.
Last two weeks instead of the usual Wed. night trainer session at ModusVelo, we have been doing some speed workouts in Central Taiwan Science Park near the shop. The environ reminds me of all the SJBC clubs crits in forlorn technology parks I did back in the day: deserted streets, big office/factory blocks, the initial shock of post-workday legs cranking up.
We are doing the training with Team MV. It helps the newer guys with their handling and the paceline work. Of course with a few races coming up next month this training helps to get our engines tuned. We had so much fun that we are talking about turning this into a weekly night crit next summer.
The races were held on the vehicle testing track called ARTC in the wind-blown Changhua Seashore Industrial Area. In the morning we had the 10km 5-man TTT. With our team of four we had to find a guest rider in Phillipe, who did an admirable job. Out of 42 teams we ended up 7th.
